  Clare Baskerville

Clare Baskerville creates ephemeral, sculptural work, in response to the surface flow of materials in urban and rural landscapes, whilst more lasting expressions are through the field of expanded drawing, using wire and charcoal.

Walking plays a significant role in her initial research; creating performative, wayfaring lines and inviting new knowledge of a specific site or open-ended traversing. This stage has a cyclical, restless quality and the energy is often driven by the weather or time of the day. During a recent six-month residency at SpudWORKS, in the New Forest, Clare generated a body of work as a wanderer, hunter gatherer, observer and listener; investing in a slow courtship of place.

A single pine tree over-looking a valley, had an abundance of pine needles around its’ base each morning, which kept drawing her attention. The scattered energy of extensive wandering calmed and, through investigating pine needles as material, came a quiet, subtle exchange and an anchoring of mind and location. The pine needles became familiar, known tools to draw on the ground with, collect, dry and bundle. This repeated, local, material focus, created an openness for the unknown; a somatic interbeing with the seasons, skies and the wider landscape.
